GoThe No. 24 ranked University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team lost their first Big Ten match of the season to No. 21 Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Evanston, Ill., 184-114. The Gophers only won four of sixteen events in the dual match-up, falling to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
Senior Jinny Smedstad swam season bests in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.69) and the 400 IM (4:27.32) to place first and second, respectively, in the events. Junior Dana Baum won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:07.95, while junior Keri Hehn placed first in the 100 breaststroke, swimming 1:04.96. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Baum, Smedstad and first-year athletes Paige Gilgan and Katy Coombe took first place with a time of 3:31.81.
Up next, the Gophers host the Minnesota Invitational on Friday through Sunday, Nov. 16-18 at the University Aquatic Center. The invitational is Minnesota's biggest home event of the season. Start time is noon on Friday, Nov. 16.
