2001 NCAA National Championships Preview
For the eighth time in school history, Minnesota has qualified for the NCAA National Championships. The Gophers go into the weekend placed 27th but remain a contender in their fifth straight national appearance.
Leading the team is Lisa Dyer who finished eighth at the Big Ten meet (17:38.7) and 12th at the NCAA Midwest Regional (21:30.9). Dyer has the best six-kilometer time for the team this season and is looking to place high at nationals. Sophomore Laura Bjork has run third or fourth for the Gophers most of the season, but came out strong at the Midwest Regional, taking 13th overall (21:31.5) and second for the Gophers. Her time at regionals was a full minute faster than her previous career best.
However, don't count out sophomore Darja Vasiljeva. Vasiljeva has struggled recently, taking 15th at the Big Ten meet (17:52.6) and 18th at the Midwest Regional (21:45.7), but still holds the school record in the 6K for the Gophers as well as the team's top spot last year at the 2000 NCAA National Championships where she took 49th overall.
