GOPHER SPIKERS CAPTURE BIG WIN AT NORTHWESTERN

anThe Golden Gopher volleyball team captured an important 3-1 (30-28, 27-30, 30-24, 30-27) victory over Northwestern in Big Ten action in Evanston, Ill., on Friday. Minnesota improved to 18-9 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

The match was important as the Gophers make a run toward an NCAA Tournament invitation. Minnesota's final three regular-season matches, including Sunday's contest at Wisconsin, are against nationally ranked teams.

The Gophers used a balanced attack to defeat the Wildcats. Senior outside hitter Kathy Tilson posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs and led a contingent of four Gophers in double figure kills. Middle blocker Stephanie Hagen also landed 13, while Casse Busse and Amanda Cipperly each added 10. Setter Lindsey Berg collected 42 assists and directed the Minnesota offense to a .246 attack percentage in the match.

Minnesota remains tied with Michigan State for fifth place in the Big Ten standings. Michigan State upset No. 9 Ohio State, 3-1, on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
