GOPHER WOMEN IN THIRD AFTER DAY ONE OF MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL

inThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team is in third place with 183 points after the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational. Thirteen women's teams are competing in the three-day invitational, held at the University Aquatic Center. Notre Dame is in first with 308 points; while University of Wisconsin holds second place with 295 points.

Junior diver Kim Bahmer placed second in the one-meter diving competition, scoring a NCAA Zone Qualifying point total of 265.10. First -year athlete Abbie Bowden (224.85), junior Holly Hanneman (222.65) and first-year athlete Emily Nauman (210.30), who placed 10th, 12th and 16th, respectively, joined Bahmer to total 30 points for the Gophers.

Junior Dana Baum finished second in the 500-yard freestyle, swimming a NCAA qualifying time of 4:53.83, the team's best 500 free time of the season. Senior Jinny Smedstad placed fourth in the 500 freestyle with a season best time of 4:56.36. Also placing for the Gophers in the 500 freestyle was senior Kristin Rygg (4:59.94) and first-year athlete Paige Gilgan (5:02.41), who placed 10th and 12th in the consolation race.

The 400 medley relay team consisting of sophomore Megan Moore, junior Keri Hehn, sophomore Juleen Rodakowski and Smedstad placed fourth with a season best time of 3:49.33. First-year athlete Sarah Solfelt led Minnesota in the 50 freestyle with a 10th place finish, swimming a team season best time of 24.20 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Bohlsen placed 19th in the event (24.34).

The Minnesota Invitational continues on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17- 18. Start time on Saturday is noon. For day one full results, go to schedules under women's swimming and diving.
