GOPHERS DEFEAT THIRD-RANKED BROWN UNIVERSITY, 3-2

BroThe eighth-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team started a non-conference tilt with a 3-2 win against third-ranked Brown University. The Golden Gophers are now 7-2-2 overall while the Browns drop to 3-2-0.

The Gophers took the first blow as Minnesota scored on a power-play opportunity at 3:26 of the first period. Tracy Engstrom took a shot off a rebound from Ronda Curtin to put the Maroon and Gold up 1-0 by the end of the first period.

The Bears would strike back and take the lead in the second period with Brown scoring two goals within two minutes in the second stanza. However, the Bears would not hold the lead for long as the Gophers answered back with two goals of their own to regain the lead. Laura Slominski scored a power-play goal at 15:14 with the assist going to Melissa Coulombe. Kristy Oonincx would take the lead at 18:43 with Jerilyn Glenn on the assist. Oonincx's goal proved to be the gamewinner as the two teams went scoreless in the third. Oonincx, the WCHA Rookie of the Week, has now scored in four straight games in five games played.

Rookie goalie Jody Horak stopped 15 shots on goal in the third period alone and had 32 saves for the game. Horak is now 3-0-0 in three starts. The Gophers were outshot 34-23, including 15-9 in the third period. When the Gophers score first, Minnesota holds a 5-0-1 record. Minnesota was 2-2 on the power play, making it seven straight games the Gophers have scored a power play tally.
