WOMEN GOPHERS HOLD ONTO THIRD PLACE

GopherThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team holds onto third place in the 2001 Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center after the second day of competition. The Gophers scored 250 points in today's competition to total 433 points for the weekend. Notre Dame is in first with 714 points and University of Wisconsin is in second with 627.50 points.

Junior Keri Hehn provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke with a first place time of 1:03.44. Hehn previously qualified this season in the 200 breaststroke.

Junior Dana Baum won the 200 freestyle event with a provisional qualifying time of 1:49.77, her best time of the season. First-year athlete Paige Gilgan took fifth in the event, swimming 1:52.35. Gilgan and Baum, along with first-year athlete Sarah Solfelt and senior Jinny Smedstad, took second in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:33.40.

Sophomore Megan Moore placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.81), as well as swimming the backstroke leg of the 200 medley relay. Moore, along with Hehn, sophomore Sarah Bohlsen and Baum, took second in the event, swimming a season best time of 1:45.40. The Minnesota Invitational concludes tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 18.
