LINDSAY WHALEN NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WhUniversity of Minnesota sophomore guard Lindsay Whalen was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, released today by the Big Ten office. Whalen garnered most valuable player honors in leading the Golden Gophers to the title in their tip-off tournament over the weekend.

The 5-8 point guard from Hutchinson, Minn., averaged 21.0 points per game, scoring 25 points against Butler and 17 in the championship tilt versus Santa Clara. Whalen converted on 20-of-24 field goals attempts in the two games, for an impressive 83 percent. Against Butler, Whalen set a Gopher single-game record for field goal percentage in 10 baskets made, hitting 12-of-13 shots for 92.3 percent.

Whalen's total of 42 points was scored in just 49 minutes of play. She also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game.

Minnesota (2-0) travels to Hawaii to compete in the Panda Travel Rainbow Wahine Classic in its next outing. The Gophers will play No. 9 Stanford in the Classic's first round on Friday.
