109The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team won eight of the first 10 events Friday night, at the Aquatic Center, during dual action versus North Carolina and North Dakota to open a 109-77 and a 158-28 lead over the Tar Heels and Fighting Sioux, respectively.

The Golden Gophers' 200-yard medley relay team of Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Chad Krastins and Allen Ong won in 1:29.61, while the 800-yard freestyle of Justin Mortimer, Brandon Crook, Terry Silkaitis and Matt Taylor took top honors in 6:42.35. Ben Herdt won the 1-meter diving competition with 281.85 points, while Mortimer, Crook, Smolinski, Hackler and Ong were individual champions as well.

Mortimer won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:09.66, Crook the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.95, Smolinski the 100-yad backstroke in 48.55, Hackler the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.91 and Ong the 50-yard freestyle in 20.69.

The duals will conclude Saturday at the Aquatic Center with competition starting at noon.
