MEN'S GOLF SIGNS HEMPSTOCK TO LETTER OF INTENT

fiThe University of Minnesota men's golf team received a letter of intent from John Hempstock to play with the Golden Gophers beginning in the fall of 2002. The Coveland, Scotland native is currently finishing his senior year at Dumfries Academy.

Hempstock won the South of Scotland Under-18 Championship (strokeplay and matchplay) and also holds the Dumfriesshire (state) Under-21 title. He was nominated for Athlete of the Year for the South of Scotland. Hempstock is a member of the Scottish National Under-18 Team, competing in the European Junior Tournament, as well as a member of the Under-21 South of Scotland Men's Team, playing in the national strokeplay championship.

"He's a good find," said interim head coach Brad James. "John should contribute straight-away. It makes our program better. He has a lot of international experience that will help our program. It bolds well for the future."
