The University of Minnesota women's cross country head coach Gary Wilson announced that Jacenta Spandl (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) and Sara Clinkenbeard have signed National Letters of Intent. Spandl and Clinkenbeard will join the Minnesota track and field team for the 2002- 03 season.

Spandl is a three-time (1998, 1999 and 2001) high jump state champion. Spandl is the 2001 triple jump and 100 hurdle champion. She will join former high school teammate Lisa Dyer, currently a top competitor for the Gopher cross country team, when she begins her Gopher career next year. "We are thrilled to have an athlete of Jacenta's talent on our team," said Coach Wilson.

Clinkenbeard, also an outstanding basketball player, demonstrates strong overall athletic ability. "She is going to make an immediate impact on the program," said assistant track and field coach Lynne Anderson. "She is the caliber of (former Gopher) Aubrey Schmitt when she arrived here at Minnesota."

Spandl was recruited as a heptathlete, while Clinkenbeard will throw the discus and hammer for the Gophers.
