GOPHERS INK SEVEN SWIMMERS, FIVE MINNESOTA RECRUITS

KatiThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team announced today the signing of seven swimmers to its program for the 2002-2003 season. Bridget McCoy (Mendota Heights, Minn./Sibley), Katie Proell (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), Katherine Marshall (Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial), Katie Wind (St. Paul, Minn./Trinity), Kate Hardt (Carson City, Nev./Carson), Rebecca Slagerman (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center) and Abby Ruess (Edina, Minn./Edina) all signed November letters of intent.

Head Coach Jean Freeman said, "We are extremely pleased with our group of November signings. We have closed the border and kept the best of Minnesota in state. In addition, we have signed the state champion from Wisconsin and the swimmer of the meet from Junior Nationals in Kate Hardt from Carson, City Nevada. This includes eight individual state championship titles from Minnesota. We will be stronger in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles, the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and the 200 and 400 IMs. We are very happy with this group."

The Gophers signed four Minnesota recruits including Bridget McCoy, a Mendota Heights senior and USS Junior National competitor. McCoy won the 100 breaststroke and took third in the 200-yard IM at the 2001 Minnesota State High School Championships.

Hopkins senior Katie Proell. Proell is a three-time All-Conference and three-time All-State swimmer. She is the 2000 Minnesota State High School Champion in the 100 breaststroke and is a Junior National Qualifier.

Katie Wind from St. Paul, Minn. is a four-time All-State and four-time All-Conference selection. At the 2001 Minnesota State High School Championships she set a Class A state meet record in the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:53.26. Wind also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.46.

Edina senior Abby Ruess won both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke at the 2001 Minnesota State High School Championships in the Class AA division. Ruess' breaststroke time of 1:04.72 set a new Class AA state meet record.

Rebecca Slagerman from Brooklyn Park, Minn. is an USS Sectional Finalist, USS Junior National Finalist and a national top-twenty distance freestyler.

Kate Hardt comes to Minnesota from Carson, Nev. as the USS Junior National Champion, USS Junior National Swimmer of the Meet, Nevada High School Champion and a US National Qualifyer.

Katherine Marshall, a Madison, Wis. resident, is the 2001 Wisconsin State High School Champion in the 100 breaststroke and a member of the Wisconsin 2001 High School State Championship Team.
