wrestlThe Golden Gophers open their 2001-02 season Saturday in Fargo, N.D., at the 32nd annual Bison Open, Minnesota's traditional season-opening competition. The tournament is an open event in which wrestlers compete unattached. Team scores are not kept at the Bison Open, but the Maroon and Gold have historically dominated the event, attended primarily by NCAA Division II and III schools. Minnesota won nine of 10 titles at the 31st annual Bison Open in Fargo, N.D., last year. It marked the fourth-straight year that Minnesota had won nine or 10 titles at the season-opening meet. Three of the crowns came over other Minnesota teammates in the championship matches. Leroy Vega (125) and Brad Pike (165) won their fourth consecutive titles, Jared Lawrence (149) won his third-straight crown, and Brett Lawrence, Chad Erikson, Luke Becker and Owen Elzen each won their second consecutive Bison titles. This season, the Golden Gophers return seven wrestlers who won Bison Open titles at last year's meet.
