EGGUM, PAULSON CLAIM SILVER MEDALS AT WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the at 85kg championship match, Eggum fell to Khadjimourad Magomedov of Russia on a 3-0 overtime decision after losing his lock during the OT clinch. In quarterfinal competition, Eggum won a 3-0 overtime decision over Magomed Kurugliyev (KAZ). Eggum scored a takedown off an ankle pick and was awarded two points from clinch positions in the second and overtime periods to secure the decision. In his semifinal, Eggum won a 3-2 decision over Betbulat Musaev of Belarus. Musaev and Eggum traded takedowns, but Eggum scored a point on a gut to secure the match. Eggum was added to the World team after original squad member, Cael Sanderson, elected not to participate due to conflicts with the collegiate wrestling season.
Eggum is entering his second year as a member of the Golden Gopher wrestling staff as strength coordinator. He ended his career in 1999- 2000 with his third All-America honor, placing third at the 2000 NCAA Championships. The 1999 and 2000 Big Ten champion at 184 pounds, Eggum finished his career with an impressive 115-23 overall record, including a 61-11 mark in dual meets. The Sidney, Mont., native ranks ninth in all-time career victories, seventh in career dual meet wins, and ninth in career win percentage. Eggum was the recipient of the 2000 Big Ten Medal of Honor.
Paulson added another silver medal to his collection, taking second at 54kg at the Greco-Roman World Championships. He lost an 8-4 decision to Hassan Rangraz of Iran. He got behind in the match 5-0 in the first two minutes when Rangraz scored with a big throw and back exposure and another takedown and gut wrench. Paulson started the second period with a three point arm throw to make the score 4-5, but Rangraz added another three point throw with back exposure at 3:59 to bring the final score to 8-4.
Paulson, an Anoka, Minn. native and a 1996 Olympic silver medalist, earned a spot on the World Championships team, winning the Greco-Roman title at 119 pounds at the World Team Trials. Paulson wrestled at Minnesota from 1994-95 and 1997-98, capturing All-America honors in 1998 with a seventh-place finish at the national meet.
