THIRTY-FOUR STUDENT ATHLETES EARN ACADEMIC HONORS

Nineteen women athletes and 15 male athletes are among Minnesota's 34 student-athletes to earn Academic All-Big Ten recognition for fall 2001 sports. To be eligible for academic honors, an athlete must be a letterwinner in at least his/her second academic year at the institution, and carry a career grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Four student-athletes who earned All-Big Ten recognition were named to the Academic All-Big Ten list. Two members of the women's volleyball team, seniors Lindsey Berg and Stephanie Hagen, are three-time selections on both the All-Big Ten team and Academic All-Big Ten team. Two members of the football team, graduate student Jack Brewer and Derek Burns also earned accolades. Berg owns a 3.53 in marketing, while Hagen owns a 3.21 in speech communication and sports management. Brewer, an All-Big Ten first team selection by the media, has a 3.00 in sports management. All-Big Ten honorable mention senior Derek Burns has a 3.39 in business management.

The Gopher football team had the most honorees during the fall season, as twelve student-athletes were named to the all-academic team. Sophomore Peter Prudden has a 3.87 GPA in pre-business, while sophomore Dominique Sims owns a 3.72 GPA in pre-physical therapy. Including Brewer and Burns, other football players honored are Akeem Akinwale, Damien Cannaday, Jason Green, Preston Gruening, Dan Kwapinski, Andrew Merrill, Astein Osei, Zach Vevea and Ben West.

Including Berg and Hagen, seven volleyball student athletes were named to the Academic All-Big Ten team. Sophomore Cassie Busse owns the highest GPA of Minnesota student-athletes listed in the fall season with a 3.96 GPA. Other honorees are Lisa Axel, Erin Lorenzen, Carrie Noble and Kelli Wicks.

Eight members of the men's and women's cross country teams received academic all- conference accolades. Sophomore Laura Bjork owns an impressive 3.93 to lead all cross country GPA's for the fall season. Others to earn honors are Michael Bialick, Joshua DoBell, Jill Field, Anita Menden, Victoria Moses, Jenny Moylan, Amy Sas and Darja Vasiljeva.

The soccer team had five student athletes named to the academic all conference team. Junior Keely Dinse has a 3.75 GPA in fisheries and wildlife, while senior Julie Eibensteiner has a 3.72 in kinesiology. Others honored are Sarah FitzGerald, Alison Rackley and Rachael Roth.
