wildesThe Minnesota women's basketball team improved to 9-1 and won its seventh straight game as the Golden Gophers pounded Loyola-Chicago, 90-61, in the Sports Pavilion on Saturday.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think we'd be 9-1 right now," said Minnesota head coach Brenda Oldfield. "But it is a tribute to these players. They have worked very hard to get this."

Sophomore sensation Lindsay Whalen led a balanced Gopher attack with 23 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. She also added a career-high seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Minnesota shot an impressive 50.8 from the field and 80.8 from the free throw line as three other Gophers joined Whalen in double figures. Sophomore forward Kadidja Andersson notched the first double-double of her career with 11 points and a career-best 11 rebounds in 35 minutes of play.

Minnesota opened a double-digit lead early with a 17-0 run midway through the first half. Leslie Hill capped off the run with a pair of jumpers to give the Gophers their biggest lead of the half at 25-9. Minnesota held a 43-27 lead at halftime.

The Golden Gophers continued to pour it on in the second stanza, taking a 40-point advantage with 6:35 remaining following a Whalen steal and lay-up.

Maggie Toczylowski led Loyola-Chicago (6-3) with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.

The Gophers open their Big Ten schedule on Friday, Dec. 28, when Minnesota plays host to No. 24 Penn State at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.
