MINNESOTA THUMPS PROVIDENCE 6-1 TO CAPTURE MARIUCCI CLASSIC TITLE

John Pohl captured the tournament MVP on the strength of his two-goal, two-assist night (he had one assist Friday night). Minnesota opened the scoring one minute into the game on Barry Tallackson's seventh goal of the season. Pohl and Jordan Leopold earned the assists on the night. Erik Wendell made it 2-0 with his sharp angle goal from deep inside the Friar zone. Garrett Smaagaard got the single assist on the play.

Junior Jeff Taffe pushed the score to 3-0 on the power play at 16:42 of the first period, scoring off a rebound of his own shot. Pohl and Judd Stevens collected assists on Taffe's 16th goal of the year. Minnesota outshot PC 16-6 in the opening stanza.

The Friars spoiled the shutout bid at 13:55 of the second period on Marc Suderman's rebound goal that beat Minnesota freshman goaltender Travis Weber. The Golden Gophers responded with three goals to close out the game, beginning with Pohl's first lamplighter of the game at 14:57 of the second period. Wendell and Matt DeMarchi earned assists on the goal. PC outshot Minnesota 16-14 in the second period.

Pohl opened the scoring in the third period with his one-timer that beat PC goalie Nolan Schaefer high glove side on the power play at 4:18. Taffe and Paul Martin got the assists. Pohl ends his Mariucci Classic career as the tournament's all-time leading scorer at 4-7--11.

Freshman Judd Stevens closed out the rout with his first goal as a Golden Gopher at 14:14 with assists going to Brett MacKinnon and Jake Fleming. Minnesota outshot the Friars 20-3 in the third and 50-25 in the game. Weber collected the win, stopping 24-of-25 shots on the night to improve to 3-0-0 on the season.

Minnesota battles North Dakota at Mariucci Arena Friday-Saturday, Jan. 5-6, in a key WCHA series.
