NO. 1 MINNESOTA WRESTLERS DUMP HOFSTRA 33-10

The meet began at 125 pounds with third-ranked Leroy Vega dropping No. 9 Tom Noto with an 11-2 major decision. The three-time All-American notched two near-falls and two takedowns in the rout. Minnesota forfeited the 133-pound match as Ryan Lewis is suffering from a groin injury. HU's Frank Hoeffner took the win for the Pride. The Golden Gophers lost their only other match at 141 pounds as Trent Hatlevig, a replacement for starter Chad Erikson, lost to Jon Masa by a 16-4 major decision.
At 149 pounds, fourth-ranked Jared Lawrence moved his record to 8-0 with his suffocating 17-5 major decision win over No. 17 Jason DeBruin. Lawrence posted seven takedowns in the match. Second-ranked Luke Becker continued his tear at 157 pounds, dominating Paul Siemon, 16-5. Becker ended with six takedowns and 2:24 of advantage time in the win. Sixth- ranked John Hardy survived a scare at 165 pounds, coming back from a 5- 0 deficit to pin John Garriques in 2:57. Garriques scored near-fall points, but Hardy rebounded to gain his third pin of the season.
At 174 pounds, No. 4 Jacob Volkmann crushed Ralph Everett, allowing only a first period escape to the HU grappler. With the victory, Volkmann improves to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in dual meets. Damion Hahn responded in a big way to his upset loss at Oklahoma State last week with a technical fall win over Jason Skretkowicz in 6:06 (22-6). Hahn registered nine takedowns and a three-point near-fall in the triumph.
The final two bouts ended with decision victories for the Maroon and Gold. Second-ranked Owen Elzen prevailed at 197 pounds, shutting out Chris Skretkowicz 7-0 to remain unbeaten at 9-0. Fifth-ranked heavyweight Garrett Lowney closed out the dual with a 9-5 win over Matt Daddino to move his record to 9-2.
With the win, Minnesota remains keeps its dual meet winning streak alive at 17 meets. Minnesota is next in action Saturday, Dec. 8, as the Golden Gophers take on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., and James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
