Senior forward Dusty Rychart recorded his second double-double of the season and 16th of his career with 10 points and 11 rebounds, as the Golden Gophers fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 77-55, Friday night in Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
Rychart, who was named the Big Ten co-Athlete of the Week last Monday, recorded his first double-double of the season when he poured in 22 points and had 13 rebounds against Wake Forest. Rychart was 6-of-8 from the free throw line, while grabbing a game-high four offensive rebounds versus Georgia.
Losing their second consecutive game, the Golden Gophers (4-3 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) shot just 19-of-66 (28.8%) from the field, while the Bulldogs made 28-of-66 (42.4%) in maintaining a double-digit lead for much of the game.
Travarus Bennett added eight points and six rebounds for Minnesota, while Jerry Holman, Maurice Hargrow and Rick Rickert each contributed seven tallies. Holman also had two blocks to up his season total to 11, three behind Rickert for the team lead.
The Bulldogs (6-1 overall, 0-0 SEC) jumped out to a 19-6 advantage, but baskets by Kevin Burleson, Hargrow and Holman got Minnesota within six. Georgia promptly went on a 16-0 run, ended by a Bennett free throw, to put the Bulldogs comfortably ahead heading to a 40-29 halftime advantage.
With 17:39 to go in the second half, Minnesota was able to cut the deficit to a mere seven points on a Bennett three-pointer, but that was as close as the Gophers could get.
Minnesota will return to action Monday night when they host Oregon in Williams Arena. The game will shown nationally on ESPN2 and start at 6 p.m.
