2/1/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Michigan (14-7, 7-4) scored 37 points off the Gopher miscues and used a 10-of-19 performance from behind the arc to overcome the effect of missing leading scorer Anne Thorius from the lineup due to an ankle injury.
The Wolverines scored the game's first 10 points as the Gophers committed five turnovers and missed their first four shots in the first five minutes. Minnesota (8-12, 1-8) shook off its slow start by hitting four of its next five field goals and held Michigan to 1-of-8 from the floor over the next four minutes to whittle the Wolverine lead to 13-10. Michigan held a 27-21 lead at halftime.
A three-pointer by Alayne Ingram with 15:34 left to play gave Michigan a nine-point lead but Minnesota refused to quit. The Gophers answered with a 9-0 run fueled by six points from Lindsay Whalen to tie the score at 34 with 12:58 remaining.
With the score tied at 36, Michigan's Infini Robinson and Ingram hit consecutive three-point field goals to return the momentum to the Wolverines, who went on to build as big as a 21-point lead in the last minute of play.
Michigan finished with four players in double figures, led by Ingram with 17 and Robinson with 14. Minnesota was led by Whalen and Kim Prince with 12 apiece.
Minnesota plays its next game on Sunday, when the Gophers travel to Illinois.
