The University of Minnesota Golden gopher men's basketball team may have been out-scored and out-rebounded, but they were not out-hustled, out-played or out-spirited. The Golden Gophers lost to No. 4 Michigan State 94-83 at Williams Arena, but no one except the Gophers themselves would have guessed the game would have been so close.

Playing with only six scholarship players, the never-say-die Golden Gophers were able to cut a one-time 20-point lead to two points with 3:54 remaining in the game. Their fight continued through the end of the game, led by senior Terrance Simmons, but after being cut to just five scholarship players after junior Dusty Rychart fouled out with 2:59 remaining the Spartans were able to pull further ahead a secure the victory.

Minnesota was able to stay in the game with their hot three-point shooting. The team set a new school record, hitting 16 three-pointers in the course of the game. The previous record was 11. Minnesota was 16-for-30 (.533) from behind the three-point arc. Simmons led the team shooting 7-of-12 from behind the arc, including one with no time left in the first half to send the Gophers to the locker room down by only eight.

Simmons led all scorers with a career-high 34 points. He also led Minnesota in rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (4). Kevin Burleson, Shane Schilling and Dusty Rychart also scored in double figures with 16, 11 and 10 respectively. Charlie Bell led six Michigan State players in double figures with 17. He was also the games leading rebounder with 9.

Minnesota's record now stands at 16-8 and 4-7 in Big Ten play. They will face Penn State on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
