GOPHERS LOSE TO VIRGINIA IN TRIANGLE CLASSIC SEMIFINAL

eight-gameThe University of Minnesota softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Virginia in the championship semifinals of the Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C. The Golden Gophers (10-3-1) finish their eight-game road trip with a 5-2-1 record and a tie for third in the 24-team Triangle Classic.

Senior infielder Angel Braden and first-year pitcher Piper Marten were named to the all-tournament team. Both Braden and Marten were part of the all-tournament team at the Metrodome Softball Classic last weekend.

Minnesota rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning. Sophomore shortstop Shelly Nichols had her third hit of the day, and Tammi Hays later drove in Nichols for the Gophers' lone run. Sophomore left-hander Angie Recknor took the loss for Minnesota.

The Gophers will next play Wed., Feb. 28, in a non-conference doubleheader at San Diego State beginning at 1 p.m. (PST).
