GOPHER WOMEN DROP HOME FINALE TO NO. 21 WISCONSIN

ThursdWisconsin used a 14-0 run to close the first half of play to take a comfortable 40-17 lead and went on to defeat Minnesota, 86-43, in Big Ten women's basketball action at the Sports Pavilion on Thursday.

Wisconsin remains in a tie for second place in the Big Ten standings at 18-7 overall and 11-4 in league action, while Minnesota loses its ninth straight and falls to 7-18, 1-14.

The Gophers trailed 24-14 when Kim Prince hit a jumper to bring the Wisconsin lead down to eight points with 5 minutes, 11 second remaining in the first half. Minnesota would manage just one more point in the half, a free throw by Brandy Pickens at the 4:37 mark. Leah Hefte came off the bench to tally a pair of three-point field goals in the Badgers' run to end the half.

Minnesota continued to struggle from the field, shooting 27 percent in the first half and following that with a 28 percent outing in the second half. Meanwhile, Wisconsin shot 51 percent for the game and set a school record with just seven turnovers.

Lindsay Whalen led the Gophers with 14 points but went 5-for-17 from the floor. Kim Prince was the only other Gopher in double figures with 10 points.

Four Badgers finished in double digits, led by Jesse Stomski and Kristi Seeger with 13 points.

Minnesota completes its regular-season schedule on Sunday, when the Gophers travel to Michigan State.
