MINNESOTA QUALIFIES 11 FOR FINALS IN LAST DAY OF COMPETITION

additiThe University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team will finish 2001 Big Ten Championships as strong as they started. The Golden Gophers qualified 11 individuals for tonight's finals. In addition, four Gophers will swim in the finals of the 1650 freestyle, an event that does not have prelims.
Jeff Hackler set a new school record with his NCAA A standard time of 1:56.33 in the 200 breaststroke. He held the previous record. Chris Forrest, Dov Malnik and Martin Gustavvson all qualified for finals as well with career-best times. Gustavvson's time of 1:57.43 was an A cut, while Forrest and Malnik each hit B cut times.
Minnesota's backstroke trio, Todd Smolinski, Ben Bartell and Alex Massura, that took the top three places in last night's 100 back could do the same again tonight in the 200 back, as they all qualified for finals. Diego Urreta qualified for consolation finals. All four had NCAA B standard times. Smolinski, Bartell and Urreta all clocked career-best times.
Allen Ong was the only Gopher to qualify for the 100 freestyle finals with his B and career-best time of 43.96. Brandon Crook qualified for consolation finals with a career-best and B time of 44.84.
Keam Ang hit a NCAA A standard time with his career-best 1:44.48 to qualify for finals in the 200 butterfly. Chad Krastins and Matt Taylor also qualified with career-bests, 1:47.24 and 1:47.85, respectively.</ p> Tonight is the final session of the 2001 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. The first three heats of the 1650 freestyle begin at 5 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The final heat of the 1650 and all other finals begin at 7 p.m. Awards and the presentation of the 2001 Championship trophy will follow the final event.
