Piroglu twisted her left knee in the fourth minute of the game and was unable to return. Her status for Sunday's game versus Iowa is undetermined. Piroglu missed three games in early January with an injury to her right knee.
With Piroglu out of the lineup, the Gopher offense struggled with 23 turnovers. Gopher leading scorer Lindsay Whalen was forced to take over the point guard position and though she scored 15 points, she also committed nine turnovers.
The Buckeyes (14-7, 4-7) scored the game's first points, a three-pointer by Jaime Lewis, and never trailed in the contest. Ohio State led by as many as 15 points with 3:28 left in the first halftime, but the Gophers scored the last six points of the half to pull to within 32-23 at intermission.
Minnesota (8-14, 1-10) used three-pointers by Whalen and Lindsay Lieser and a bucket by Kim Prince to start the second half with a flurry and chip the Buckeye lead to five at 36-31. The Buckeyes answered with a 12-2 run and the Gophers could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Free throws were a big factor in the final outcome. Ohio State made twice as many trips to the line as the Gophers, making 15-of-24, compared to 6-of-12 for Minnesota.
Prince tallied her second career double-double, leading Minnesota with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The sophomore forward hit an impressive 8-of-10 from the field.
Minnesota looks to break its five-game losing streak on Sunday, when the Gophers host Iowa at noon at the Sports Pavilion.
