BASEBALL DROPS CONNECTICUT 6-3

3/10/2001 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

Rob LaRue and junior Jason Kennedy each went 3-for-4 and senior Josh Holthaus extended his team-high hit streak to eight games, as Minnesota downed Connecticut Saturday afternoon at the HHH Metrodome. Sophomore C.J. Woodrow struck out five Huskies in six innings of work, en route to his second victory of the year. Jesse Carlson went the distance for the Huskies, allowing six earned runs and nine hits.

Holthaus, who is hitting .444 (12-27) with 15 RBI, one home run and two triples over his last eight games, put the Golden Gophers on the board first with a three-run shot to left field - his first home run of the season. The Huskies tied the game up in top of the fifth, thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from Brian Tisbert and Cy Hess. Minnesota responded, however, with an offensive strike of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Scott Welch doubled in Holthaus, and later came around to score with Kennedy on LaRue's second career triple. LaRue finished the game a home run shy of the cycle and bumped his season average up to .304. Nine Golden Gophers are now above the .300 mark in 2001.

Minnesota and Connecticut wrap up their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CST at the HHH Metrodome. Tickets are just $6 for adults and $4 for children 14 and under. Sunday's starter for the Golden Gophers will be freshman Craig Molldrem (0-0, 4.76). For more information on Saturday's game between these two teams, please visit www.gophersports.com.
