Gophers Currently Tied for 22nd In National Poll
Minnesota is currently ranked in a tie for 22nd in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll. The Golden Gophers have been ranked as high as 16th this season, and have appeared in every poll. Other Big Ten teams that are ranked are Michigan (12th), Penn State (14th), Wisconsin (15th), Indiana (16th) and Northwestern (20th).
Christoferson, Baum Qualify for NCAA Meet
Katy Christoferson, a three-time Big Ten champion and Minnesota's school-record holder in both individual medley events, is seeded 10th in both the 200 and 400 IM events. She finished eighth in the 400 IM at the 2000 NCAA meet and earned All-American status. Christoferson is seeded 11th in the 100 butterfly.
Christoferson is competing in her fourth NCAA meet. As a first- year swimmer in 1998, she earned honorable mention All-America honors as a member of Minnesota's 800 free relay team that placed 15th. In her sophomore season, she earned three more All-America honorable mentions as a member of Minnesota's 200, 400 and 800 free relay teams. In addition to her All-America award in the 400 IM at the 200 NCAA meet, Christoferson earned three more All-America honorable mentions as a member of Minnesota's 200 medley relay, the 400 and 800 free relays.
Dana Baum has qualified for her first NCAA meet, and is seeded 23rd in the 200 freestyle, 23rd in the 500 free and 24th in the 1650 free. She has finished in the top eight in the Big Ten in all three distance freestyle events in both of her years at Minnesota.
Junior Jinny Smedstad (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/John F. Kennedy) barely missed making the NCAA field, and is the third overall alternate.
2001 NCAA Zone Diving Review
Senior Tracy LaVoi (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) was Minnesota's most successful diver at the 2001 NCAA Zone Diving meet in Bloomington, Ind. LaVoi finished eighth in 3-meter diving, ninth in 1-meter diving and 11th in platform diving, the Gophers' highest finish in each of the three events, but failed to place high enough to qualify for the NCAA meet. Sophomore Kim Bahmer (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) finished 11th in 1-meter diving, sophomore Holly Hanneman (Mequon, Wis./Luther Prep) took 12th in platform diving and first-year diver Shannon Jackson (Andover, Minn/Anoka) was 17th in 3-meter diving.
