GOPHER WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS DRAKE, 6-1

GoldThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team won the doubles point and five of six singles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over Drake on Friday at the Northwest Athletic Club in Bloomington. The Golden Gophers improve to 7-3 on the season.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Michaela Havelkova and freshman Valerie Vladea defeated Drake's Cecily Dubusker and Rajasree Kuruvilla, 8-2, while the No. 3 team of sophomore Amy Thomas and freshman Brandi Watts defeated Jenny Saluri and Melinda Fenimore, 8-2. Minnesota has won the doubles point in eight of 10 matches this season.

Junior Jennifer Howard earned Minnesota's first singles win by defeating Saluri at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-0. Watts won at No. 6, defeating Fenimore 6-1, 6-4. The Golden Gophers clinched the victory with senior Tammy Wang's win over Kuruvilla at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2. Vladea (No. 1) and Havelkova (No. 3) also won in singles for Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers return to Big Ten Conference play next weekend. Minnesota hosts Michigan State at 7 p.m. on Friday and Michigan at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
