Minnesota Set for Midweek Matchup Against South Dakota

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team is set to host South Dakota in a midweek matchup at noon Wednesday, March 18, at Baseline Tennis Center.
The Season So Far
Minnesota opened the season with six straight wins, highlighted by a victory over Iowa State, before falling to Alabama and Colorado and closing the weekend with a win over Drake to move up to No. 53 in the rankings. The Gophers later dropped matches to Kansas and Kansas State, then swept a doubleheader against No. 49 Denver and St. Thomas before falling to No. 17 USC and No. 6 UCLA. Most recently, Minnesota lost road matches to Purdue and Indiana.
Scouting South Dakota
Minnesota and South Dakota have met six times in series history, with the Gophers holding a 6-0 lead. Minnesota won the most recent meeting, 7-0, on Feb. 10, 2024. South Dakota opened the season with a three-match winning streak before dropping eight of its last nine matches. The Coyotes are led by senior Selena Bird, who plays at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles and put together a nine-match winning streak earlier this season. The two teams also met at the annual Gopher Invitational in the fall, where Minnesota went 2-0 in doubles against South Dakota.
Magnificent Mia
Mia Liepert is 10-3 in singles during the spring season while competing at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots for the Gophers. She has won six of her last eight matches, including a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 54 Mayu Crossley of UCLA. Liepert enters the match with 49 career singles victories.
Summit League Success
Minnesota is 7-0 against Summit League opponents under head coach Lois Arterberry, including a 1-0 mark against South Dakota. The Gophers defeated the Coyotes 7-0 on Feb. 10, 2024. Arterberry previously coached in the Summit League at St. Thomas from 2021-23.
