GOPHERS REACH FINALS IN TWO EVENTS IN DAY ONE

Freshman Justin Mortimer was the first to earn a finals spot with his time of 4:19.05 in prelims. The 400 medley relay of sophomores Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Allen Ong and junior Chad Krastins placed fifth in prelims with a time of 3:11.93 to advance to finals.

Senior diver Dan Croaston earned Minnesota's first points of the meet with his finish on the 1-meter springboard. Only the top eight advanced to tonight's finals.

Three other Golden Gophers competed this afternoon, but did not make this evening's finals. Junior Ben Bartell placed 40th with a 1:49.82 in the 200 individual medley. Sophomore Allen Ong took 27th in the 50 free with a career-best time of 20.11. Junior Ricardo Dornelas also swam the 50 free and finished with a time of 20.48.

Finals begin tonight at 7 p.m. at the Texas A&M Rec Natatorium.
