GOLDEN GOPHERS IN 12TH AFTER FIRST DAY

FresThe Minnesota Golden Gophers finished fifth and sixth in two events to have five athletes win All-America honors at the 2001 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in College Station, Texas.
Freshman Justin Mortimer took sixth in the 500 freestyle with a 4:19.58. The 400 medley relay (Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Chad Krastins and Allen Ong) took fifth with a time of 3:11.80.
Minnesota finished the day with 42 points to put them in 12th place, only five points out of the top 10.
The University of TExas leads after the first day with 185 points, sparked by a one-two performance in the 200 IM. Senior Nate Dusing won the event with a 1:42.85. His time set new NCAA, American, US Open and Texas A&M pool records. Junior Tom Hannan finished right behind him. Both athletes were also members of the 400 medley relay that set NCAA, American, US Open and pool records.
The meet continues Friday with prelims at noon. Minnesota will have athletes in the 200 medley and 800 free relays, 400 IM, 100 fly, 100 breast and 3-meter diving.
