GOPHER WOMEN'S TENNIS WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT

andThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team defeated Michigan, 5-2, Sunday at the Northwest Athletic Club in Bloomington for the team's fifth consecutive win. Minnesota improves to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.

The Golden Gophers won the doubles point for the 10th time in 12 matches this season. The No. 1 team of sophomore Michaela Havelkova and freshman Valerie Vladea improved to 11-1 this season by defeating Kimberly Plaushines and Szandra Fuzesi, 8-2. The No. 2 team of sophomore Jennifer Howard and senior Tammy Wang won its first doubles match of the season, defeating Jennifer Duprez and Jennifer Vaughn, 8- 6.

Minnesota earned three of its four singles victories in straight sets. Vladea defeated Kavitha Tipirneni at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. Wang defeated Vaughn, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 4. Freshman Brandi Watts defeated Duprez, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. Sophomore Amy Thomas earned a three-set victory over Chrissy Nolan at No. 2, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

Minnesota next competes at South Florida on Friday.
