GOPHER WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS EARNS NCAA REGIONAL BID

withThe 16th-ranked University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team earned an invitation to the NCAA Central Region Championship, to be held Saturday, April 7, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Minnesota qualified with a regional qualifying score of 195.925. The other teams set to compete at the Central Region meet are No. 4 Alabama, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 20 Kent State, No. 21 Ohio State and Kentucky.

The invitation marks the sixth consecutive year Minnesota has qualified for regional competition. The top two team finishers advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held April 19-21 in Athens, Ga.

Last year, Alabama placed fifth at the NCAA Championships in Boise, Idaho. Alabama is the only team in this year's NCAA Central Region field to compete at the national meet last year. Minnesota's Megan Beuckens competed as an individual, placing 25th in the nation in the all around.

Minnesota is one of five Big Ten schools to qualify for regional competition. No. 7 Michigan will host the Northeast Region Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich.; No. 14 Iowa will compete in the Southeast Region in Gainesville, Fla.; and No. 10 Penn State will compete at the South Region Championship in Lincoln, Neb.
