areThe Minnesota softball team extended its current winning streak to nine games with a doubleheader sweep of Indiana State on Wednesday, defeating the Sycamores by scores of 6-1 and 2-1. The Gophers are 21-9-1 for the season.

Minnesota rallied from 1-0 deficits in both games to sweep the doubleheader. In the opener, Indiana State held a 1-0 lead after four innings. The Gophers created a two-out rally in the fifth inning to tie the game, as Veronica Roberts tripled and scored on an error by Indiana State. Minnesota broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning on four Indiana State errors, a double by Allie Fisk and, Shelly Nichols' third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left-center field. Piper Marten pitched the first five innings to record her 14th win of the season.

In the nightcap, Minnesota erased a 1-0 Sycamore lead with two third-inning runs. With two out, Fisk singled to second base and Nichols followed with another home run, this one to right-center field. Gopher pitcher Angie Recknor retired 12 Sycamores in a row at one point and threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven batters to earn her fifth win of the season.

The Gophers will open their 2001 Big Ten softball schedule with a doubleheader Friday at Purdue, beginning at 2 p.m. (EST).
