InternationThe University of Minnesota Academic Counseling and Student Services Department honored the Men's Athletics top scholar-athletes at the annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner and Awards Ceremony at International Market Square in Minneapolis on Monday night.

Among the 180 men who were honored for posting a 3.0 or higher grade point average over the last year is an elite group honored with the Top Five Award. These five scholar-athletes are junior or senior Golden Gophers with the highest cumulative grade point averages within the Men's Athletics Department.

A native of Buseck, Germany, junior placekicker Mike Albert is a three- time Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Albert handled kickoff duties for the Golden Gopher football team for the majority of the 2000 season. An International Business major in the Carlson School of Management, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and collected his first varsity letter this past season.

Joseph Corr, a Redmond, Wash., native is a three-year letterwinner on the cross country team. He is a two-time United State Cross Country Association All-American and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He also earned All-Big Ten honors twice in 1998 and 1999 and All- District V honors in 1999. Corr is majoring in political science.

A junior from Des Moines, Iowa, Andrew Tank has been a member of the Golden Gopher men's golf team since the 1997-98 season. Tank, a business major in the Carlson School of Management, tied for first place in last summer's State Open qualifying with a 67. During his time at Dowling High School, Tank earned four letters with his two-time state championship team and was a dual meet medalist on seven occasions in his final two season as a prep golfer. He has yet to see action in collegiate golf tournaments for the Maroon and Gold.

Santiago Fernandez, a senior from Bogota, Columbia, has been a valuable member of the Minnesota golf team for the past four seasons. A senior majoring in management information systems at the Carlson School of Management, Fernandez has maintained an average of 78.6 while playing in 17 rounds for the Maroon and Gold. His career low round of 66 came at the Northern Collegiate Invite during the 1998-99 season. In addition, Fernandez was the youngest player ever to win the Columbian Open, winning the 1995 title at the age of 16.

Junior Justin Conner, a native of Dallas, Texas, was Minnesota's only gymnast to qualify in the all-around for the NCAA Qualifying meet a year ago. He went on to finish in the 18th spot at the NCAA Championships, posting a score of 53.200. A business finance major in the Carlson School of Management, Conner has been one of Gold Country's most consistent gymnasts in the past two season, competing in all nine of Minnesota's competitions in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
