mulThe University of Minnesota baseball team defeated the University of Connecticut by a score of 13-6 Friday night at the HHH Metrodome. Three Golden Gophers tallied multi-hit games and five rallied multi-run or RBI performances. Junior right-hander Mike Kobow, who went the distance last Friday versus Arkansas, lasted seven and two-thirds and struck out four. It was Kobow's second victory in 2001, and it pushed Minnesota to .500 (7-7) on the season.

The Golden Gophers got things started in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to senior Josh Holthaus' triple into right-center field, scoring freshman Sam Steidl and junior Jack Hannahan. For Holthaus, it was the second triple of the year and the fifth of his career. However, Mike Mocerino responded for Connecticut with a two-run triple of his own in the top of the second, scoring Jon Gorrie and Brian Tisbert. That made the score 2-2 after two innings, but Minnesota broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth.

Hannahan, Holthaus and sophomore Scott Welch hit in order for three consecutive doubles, as the Golden Gophers chalked up four runs in the fifth. The Huskies would scratch a few more runs on the board in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings; but a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh by freshman Gary Dick, and a two-run two-bagger by junior Jason Kennedy in the bottom of the eighth sealed the win for the home team.

Welch led the way for Minnesota with three hits, three runs and three RBI. Holthaus added a double, three runs and another RBI to his impressive two-RBI triple; and Hannahan cheated for three stolen bases and four runs scored. Junior Nick McCauley and freshman Jay Gagner aided in Kobow's victory by allowing just one hit between the two of them.

Jeff Fulchino and Jonas Swyer split time for the Huskies. Each of them surrendered six earned runs. The only highlight for Connecticut was Jon Gorrie's four-for-five night. Gorrie roped a double and a triple as the Huskie's designated hitter.

Minnesota and Connecticut will go at it again Saturday at 2 p.m. Sophomore C.J. Woodrow (1-2) is scheduled to start for the Golden Gophers. For complete box score information on Friday night's game, or any of Minnesota's previous 2001 games, please visit www.gophersports.com and click on calendar.
