FORT MYERS, FLA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team closed out their final game in the Sunshine State against Northeastern University this afternoon, benefitting on five RBIs from Jack Bello to trigger the ten run mercy rule for the second night in a row.
Bello went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in addition to his five RBIs for the Gophers. Easton Richter furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, two walks and an RBI. Weber Neels also helped out for Minnesota, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota was trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the first inning, but a Neels grounder allowed Jack Spanier to come across and score for the Gophers' first runs of the competition.
A two RBI single out to center field grew the Northeastern lead to 4-1 in the top of the second, but the Gophers did not let it go unanswered as a grand slam from Bello and a solo home run from Richter strung together five runs to take the lead.
Northeastern put their last runs of the game on the board in the top of the 3rd, pushing a run across with a pair of doubles into the outfield grass.
Minnesota tallied three more runs in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBI singles from Bello and Jameson Martin, as well as an error on the second baseman that allowed Spanier to reach second.
Spanier tallied his second hit of the game with an RBI double to center field in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Michael Lippe and getting the Gophers into double digit runs. After reaching base on a walk, Richter and Spanier would score on a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error from the catcher.
Minnesota closed out the ten run mercy rule in the seventh, with Jack Mosh scoring on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly from Neels, and a RBI single from Charlie Sutherland to end the game.
