GOPHER WOMEN EARN WINTER ALL-BIG TEN ACADEMIC AWARDS

letterwA total of 20 University of Minnesota women student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition for the winter 2001 academic term. To be eligible for academic honors, an athlete must be a letterwinner in at least her second academic year at the institution and carry a career grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Of the 20 Golden Gopher women who earned all-academic recognition during the winter term, 13 came from the swimming and diving team. Sophomore Dana Baum, who qualified for her first NCAA meet last month, had Minnesota's top GPA among swimmers and divers with a 3.88 GPA in elementary education. Other swimmers and divers named are seniors Ann Cahoy, Emily Deppe, Tracy LaVoi and Elizabeth Pierce, juniors Karen Egerman, Rachelle Giese, Anne Koller, Jocelyn Pogue, Sara Rutkowski and Kristin Rygg, and sophomores Arianna Gardner and Holly Hanneman.

Six members of the women's gymnastics team that came within .15 of a point of qualifying for the NCAA Championships also qualified for the all-academic squad. Two of Minnesota's Top Five scholars, junior Catie Christensen and senior Megan Skokut, are among the six gymnasts. Christensen has a 3.99 GPA in kinesiology/physical therapy, while Skokut owns a 3.92 GPA in biology. The other gymnasts named were senior Shanyn Lancaster, junior Megan Beuckens, and sophomores Jenny Alf and Leigh Dixon. Christensen, Alf and Dixon earned all-Big Ten honors last month at the Big Ten meet.

Sophomore Lindsay Lieser was the lone member of the women's basketball team named to the all-academic list. Lieser, who led the Gophers in three-pointers made during the season, has a 3.45 GPA in education.
