MICHIGAN WINS TWO ONE-RUN SOFTBALL GAMES FROM MINNESOTA

winningThe Michigan softball team defeated Minnesota by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 in a Big Ten doubleheader Friday at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in Minneapolis. Michigan (25-11-1, 8-0 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to 13 games, while Minnesota (23-17-1, 2-8 Big Ten) has lost six games in a row.

Michigan scored the only run of the opening game in the third inning. Meghan Doe reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a groundout by Kelsey Kollen. Melissa Taylor singled to third base, advancing Doe to third. Taylor stole second and Doe was able to score on a Minnesota throwing error. Wolverine pitcher Marissa Young threw a three-hitter, allowing singles to Shelly Nichols, Angie Recknor and Piper Marten. Recknor pitched the first six innings, allowing five hits and an unearned run, but took the loss.

Minnesota broke a 20-inning scoreless streak with a run in the top of the first inning of the second game. With one out, Allie Fisk walked and stole second. Fisk advanced to third on a Michigan throwing error and scored on a single by Shelly Nichols. Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring single by Melinda Moulden and took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Stefanie Volpe. Minnesota moved the tying run to third base with two out in the fifth inning, but failed to score in its final serious threat. Michigan's Marie Barda threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out six batters. Piper Marten pitched 3 2/3 innings and took the loss, allowing both runs and striking out four batters.

The Gophers will continue their Big Ten weekend with single games against Michigan State on Saturday night at 6 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
