SPARTANS EDGE GOPHERS, 1-0, IN BIG TEN SOFTBALL
4/14/2001 12:00:00 AM | Softball
With one out in the opening inning, Spartan center fielder Shealee Dunavan was hit by a pitch by Minnesota hurler Piper Marten. Dunavan advanced to second base on a sacrifice and scored the game's only run on a two-out single by Tiffany Wallace. Minnesota's best chance to score was in the fifth inning, but the Gophers left the bases loaded. Minnesota left seven runners on base in the game. Michigan State pitchers Jessica Beech and Keri DeJong combined on a five-hit shutout. Wallace had three of Michigan State's six hits. Five Gophers each had one hit for Minnesota. Marten took the loss, pitching a complete-game six-hitter and striking out seven batters.
The Gophers will conclude their Big Ten weekend with a single game against Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
