GOPHERS RALLY TO BEAT SPARTANS, 3-1

anMinnesota rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the final two innings to defeat Michigan State, 3-1, at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in Minneapolis. The Gophers break a seven-game losing streak and improve to 24-18-1, 3-9 in the Big Ten, while Michigan State falls to 17-29, 4-6 in league play.

Minnesota fell behind 1-0 in the fifth inning after allowing an unearned run. The Gophers scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Tammi Hays led off the inning with a single and stole second. Angel Braden followed with a single to left-center to score Hays and tie the score, 1-1. Anne Thul sacrificed pinch-runner Meagan Hautala to second base and reached on a Michigan State fielding error. After a fielder's choice, Thul advanced to third on a sacrifice by Veronica Roberts and scored on a single by Morgan Holden.

The Gophers added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Allie Fisk singled and moved to third base with one out on a Michigan State error. With two out, Piper Marten singled up the middle to score Fisk. Michigan State loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh, by Holden's running catch deep in the right-field corner saved the game for Minnesota. Angie Recknor pitched five strong innings for Minnesota and evened her record at 7-7 for the season.

The Gophers will host Northern Iowa in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
