GOPHER SOFTBALL SHUTS OUT NORTHERN IOWA TWICE

The Gophers scored the only run of the first game in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two out, Tammi Hays grounded a single up the middle and stole second base. Angel Braden hit a 3-2 pitch off of the center-field fence for a double, scoring Hays to end the game. Recknor threw her first complete-game shutout of the season, allowing no walks and striking out four batters, to improve to 8-7 for the season. Hays and Veronica Roberts each had two hits for the Gophers, who outhit the Panthers, 7-3.
In the nightcap, Hays started the Gopher rally in the first inning when she was hit by a pitch. She stole second base, advanced to third on groundout and scored on a two-out single by Veronica Roberts. In the third inning, Marten singled and was sacrificed to second by Allie Fisk. Pinch-runner Amy Hafemeyer advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Anne Thul. Marten struck out 10 batters, the fifth time this season she has fanned double-digit batters in a game, and has 193 strikeouts for the season, moving into second place on Minnesota's single-season strikeout list. She is 34 strikeouts shy of Recknor's total of 227 strikeouts from last season.
The Gophers will host Concordia-St. Pau in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
