KELLEY EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS

GymnasUniversity of Minnesota junior gymnast MaryAnne Kelley (Barrington, Ill./Fremd) earned second-team All-America honors on vault at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship in Athens, Ga., on Thursday. She is just the fourth Golden Gopher to earn NCAA All-America acclaim in the sport of women's gymnastics.

Kelley scored a 9.85 to place fifth in the second session of the competition to earn the honor. The top four gymnasts on each apparatus earn first-team All-America honors and advance to the event finals on Saturday. Kelley missed first-team status by 0.025.

The lone Golden Gopher competing in the Championships, Kelley tallied a score of 38.575 in the all around competition. In addition to her 9.85 on vault, she posted a 9.60 on uneven bars, a 9.275 on balance beam and a 9.85 on floor exercise. She missed second-team All-America honors by 0.025 on the floor.

Kelley is the first Gopher All-American since 1997, when Mindy Knaeble earned first-team honors on floor and Judy Cavazos captured second-team accord on the uneven bars. The other NCAA All-American in Gopher history was Marie Roethlisberger, who was a four-time All-American and the 1990 uneven bars national champion.
