NCAA CHAMPION CLAY STROTHER TO COMPETE AT ROMANIAN INTERNATIONAL CUP

StatesUniversity of Minnesota sophomore gymnast Clay Strother, the 2001 NCAA floor exercise and pommel horse champion, will be competing for the United States in the Romanian International Cup Friday-Sunday, April 27-29, in Bucharest, Romania.

Strother will be competing in his first international meet and will face a strong field with several athletes from the 2000 Olympic Games participating in the event. The all-around competition will take place Friday, followed by the event finals on Sunday. He will be accompanied by Minnesota Assistant Coach Thom Glielmi who was recently named the 2001 National Assistant Coach of the Year by NCAA coaches.

Strother captured the floor exercise and pommel horse individual event titles at the 2001 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships in Columbus, Ohio in early April. Strother became the first Golden Gopher in school history to win two event crowns in the same national meet. Minnesota's last individual event champion was John Roethlisberger on the pommel horse in 1993. Roethlisberger also won the all-around title that year.

Strother, a native of Jasper, Texas, won the floor exercise with a score of 9.525 and the pommel horse title with a score of 9.662. He finished fifth in the nation in the all-around, registering a score of 54.150. With his strong performances, Strother earned three All-America honors.
