In the opener, Gopher sophomore Angie Recknor scattered five hits and posted her second complete-game shutout of the season and 12th of her career. Minnesota scored two runs in the second inning on run-scoring singles by Morgan Holden and Hailee Nanchy, and added a run in the third inning on a fielder's choice by Shelly Nichols. Holden had two of Minnesota's five hits in the first game.
Minnesota first-year pitcher Piper Marten threw her first one-hitter of the season in the nightcap, walking none and striking out 10 batters. Marten set a new Minnesota single-season record of 229 strikeouts, eclipsing Recknor's total of 227 from last season. Nichols singled home Tammi Hays in the first inning to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead, and Hays singled to bring in Marten in the second inning for the game's other run. Nanchy had the first three-hit game of her Gopher career to lead Minnesota's eight-hit attack.
Co-head coach Lisa Bernstein coached her 600th game in the opener and won her 350th game in the nightcap. Bernstein is one win shy of Linda Wells' school-record total of 351 wins.
Minnesota will host Penn State in a Big Ten doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
