Mark Fahey</ a> won the discus with a throw of 177-11 at the Texas Team. Sophomore Toby Henkels took first in the 400m at Carleton. Two Minnesota freshmen, competing as unattached athletes at Carleton, showed promise for the future of Minnesota track and field by winning their respective events. Josh Paulson won the high jump and Ryan Ford won the 1500m run.
Next Up The Golden Gophers will travel to the 92nd Annual Drake Relays, one of the largest outdoor track meets in the world. Nearly 9,000 athletes from high school to masters will compete in the three-day event. 21 Golden Gophers will compete. See the list and event schedule above for details.
Minnesota at the Drake Relays The Golden Gopher have traditionally performed well at the Drake Relays. Three Golden Gopher players and coaches are in the Drake Relays Hall of Fame. Former Head Coach Roy Griak was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994. Nryl Thompson and Fortune Gordien are both in the Hall of Fame for their performances in the discus. Thompson is part of an elite group of athletes, including Olympians Michael Johnson and Bruce Jenner, that have won an event three or more times. Marc Johannsen is the only current member of the Golden Gopher squad that has won a Drake Relays collegiate title. He won the high jump in 1999.< /p> NCAA Qualifiers Minnesota has one automatic NCAA qualifier and three provisional qualifier, but heir wishlist includes many more athletes who are very close to provisional marks. Freshman Mitch Potter automatically qualified for the 400m with a school-record time of 45.40 at teh Sea Ray Relays. Senior Tom Gerding also provisionally qualified in the same event at the same meet with a time of 45.64. Senior Marc Johannsen provisionally qualified in the high jump at the first meet of the year with a leap of 7-1 3/4. Junior Lyndon McDowell is just 27 points under the automatic point total in the decathlon with 7,473 points.
Good News. Bad News The good news is Mitch Potter won the 400m at the Sea Ray Relays. Along the way he broke the Minnesota varsity and freshmen records and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. His time of 45.40 was the second fastest time in the nation recorded this season. The bad news is that in accomplishing all this, Potter pulled his hamstring and will most likely not be available for competition again until the Big Ten Championships.
