MINNESOTA HOSTS BIG TEN WOMEN'S GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Minnesota women's golf team will play host to the 2001 Big Ten Conference Women's Golf Championship, Friday-Sunday, at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. The 72-hole tournament will be contested at a par of 72 and a yardage of 5,979 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Friday, teeing off the first round at 8 a.m. and the second round at 12:30 p.m. On Saturday, the third round tees off at 9 a.m.. Sunday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow Sunday's action.
Tournament History
Purdue is the defending champion, easily outdistancing second-place Michigan State by 27 strokes. Three different teams have captured titles in the last three seasons: Indiana in 1998, Ohio State in 1999 and Purdue in 2000. Indiana and Ohio State have won the most titles with seven. The Golden Gophers won its lone title in 1989. All 11 Big Ten schools sponsor women's golf. Of the 11, only Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and Penn State have not won team crowns. Despite being shutout in team titles, Illinois has had three players capture medalist honors. Indiana has had the most medalists with seven. Minnesota's Kate Hughes won medalist honors in 1988 and 1989.

Eight of the top 10 placewinners from the 2000 Big Ten Championship, including medalist Emily Bastel of Michigan State, return to battle for top individual honors in this year's Championship. Bastel posted an even-par score of 288 on Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course to capture medalist honors by one stroke over a pair of Purdue golfers, Stacy Orschell and Kari Damron. Damron also returns to the field this season.
