5/18/2001 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field

doiUniversity of Minnesota senior Mark Fahey took eighth in the hammer throw at the 2001 Big Ten Track and Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind. In doing so, Fahey scored Minnesota's first point of the meet. All other events have been temporarily delayed due to rain.

The entire morning has been plagued by steady rain, with spurts of heavy downpours. In a break between downpours, Fahey threw the hammer 182 feet, five inches. Freshman Lynden Reder made it to finals, but fell just short of scoring position with a ninth place finish and a throw of 178-4. Senior Ben Meyer finished in tenth, just missing finals with a through of 174-1. Purdue's Chris Brown won the event with a new Big Ten record throw of 221-3

Junior Jesse Madsen is in seventh and sophomore Jayme Pantekoek is in 10th after two events in the decathlon. They finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100m. Madsen finished seventh in the long jump, while Pantekoek took tenth.

The third event of the decathlon, shot put, has been delayed at least one hour, due to the weather conditions. All following events will be delayed.
