MINNESOTA WOMEN FALLTO SECOND IN DAY TWO AT BIG TEN

compeIn day two at the Outdoor Big Ten Track and Field Championships at Bloomington, Ind., the women Golden Gophers grabbed 20 points to expand their total to 53.25 points, placing them second in the competition behind Purdue.

Gopher senior Aubrey Schmitt placed second in the shot put with a toss of 50-feet, 10 _ inches. Schmitt, who was the outdoor shot put champion in 1998-2000, failed to defend her Big Ten crown.

Junior Jessica Shuster ran 2 minutes, 10.90 seconds to place fourth in the 800-meter run preliminaries. Also making the finals for Minnesota was Darja Vasiljeva and Anita Menden in the 1500-meter run, placing ninth and 12th, respectively.

In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Shani Marks qualified for Sunday's finals with a time of 61.03 seconds, placing her fourth. Allyson DeVries also qualified for the event's finals with a seventh place finish.

Senior Elaine Eggleston placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:52.10, and newcomer Saree Zweifel finished seventh in the heptathlon with a point
