SCHMITT AND NIMTZ EARN VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

Schmitt, a senior thrower from Hastings, Minn., is putting the final touches on a brilliant track and field career as a Golden Gopher. She will likely compete in the discus, hammer and shot put at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Schmitt is a three-time All-American and five-time Big Ten champion in the shot put. She was honored as Minnesota's 2001 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient. Schmitt, a second-team Academic All-America selection a year ago, maintains a 3.51 grade point average while majoring in biology.
Nimtz, a senior distance runner from Eden Prairie, Minn., is a two-time recipient of the Academic Top Five Award, given to the five student- athletes with the best cumulative grade point averages in Women's Athletics. Nimtz is provisionally qualified to compete in the 10,000- meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. A business major, Nimtz owns an impressive 3.93 grade point average. Last fall, she was honored with Verizon Academic All-District honors while competing in cross country.
