52 GOPHER WOMEN EARN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG TEN HONORS

Of the 52 Golden Gopher women who earned all-academic recognition during the spring term, 15 came from the women's track and field team. Senior Aubrey Schmitt, Minnesota's 2001 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient, leads the contingent with her third Academic All-Big Ten selection. Schmitt, a 3.51 student in biology, is the first Gopher to qualify for three events at an NCAA meet, which begins Wednesday, in Eugene, Ore. and is eligible for Academic All-America consideration. Junior javelin thrower Linda Lindqvist, Minnesota's other competitor in this week's NCAA meet, earned her second Academic All-Big Ten accolade with a 3.63 GPA in economics.
Fifteen (15) student-athletes of Minnesota's first-year rowing program earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, including sophomore Shelley Miller, a 3.91 student in finance. The Gopher women's hockey team landed seven members, including seniors Angela Borek, Emily Buchholz, Erica Killewald and Kris Scholz. Minnesota's softball team also had seven Academic All-Big Ten players, including seniors Amy Hafemeyer and Morgan Holden. The Gopher women's golf team had five members, while the women's tennis team placed three student-athletes. All 52 student- athletes receiving mention are listed at the end of this release.
The University of Minnesota women student-athletes have compiled a cumulative grade point average at or above 3.00 for 26 consecutive terms. The cumulative GPA for fall semester 2000 was 3.11. The 2001 spring semester has concluded, but grade reports have not yet been released.
